Biscotti, Biscotto or Biscottis?
Biscottis: Is That the Plural of Biscotti?
In my house growing up, we said “biscottis.” It was our family quirk, not an Italian grammar rule.
The proper Italian word is biscotti. It is already plural. One cookie is a biscotto, while more than one are biscotti.
Still, plenty of people in the United States search for “biscottis,” say “biscottis,” and know exactly what they mean: those crisp Italian cookies made for coffee. That is why this page exists.
Are “Biscottis” and Biscotti the Same Thing?
Yes. When English speakers say biscottis, they are usually talking about the same twice-baked Italian cookies Italians call biscotti. “Biscottis” is common informal English usage, but it is not the traditional Italian plural.
Biscotto vs. Biscotti vs. Biscottis
Biscotto

Biscotti
The Italian plural. Two or more are biscotti.
Biscottis
An informal English plural that became common after the word entered American food culture.
Why I Grew Up Saying “Biscottis”

I grew up around biscotti because my Sicilian grandmother baked them in our family kitchen. Nobody sat around discussing Italian grammar. We were talking about food, family, coffee, and whether there were any biscotti left.
Somewhere along the way, “biscottis” became part of the way we spoke at home.
When I later started The Biscotti Company, I realized plenty of other people said it too. Rather than pretending the word does not exist, I think it is more useful to explain where it comes from and then get back to the important part: eating a great biscotto.
What Exactly Are Biscotti?
Biscotti are Italian-style cookies known for their crisp texture. They are typically baked first as a loaf or log, sliced, and then baked again.
That second bake removes more moisture and creates the clean crunch people associate with biscotti. It is also what makes them particularly good for dipping into coffee, espresso, cappuccino, tea, or other drinks.

Why Are Biscotti Baked Twice?
The word biscotti is connected to the idea of being twice baked. The first bake gives the dough its shape. After the loaf is sliced, the individual pieces are baked again to create their characteristic crisp texture.
Different regions of Italy developed their own versions. In Tuscany, almond biscotti are closely associated with cantucci, traditionally served with Vin Santo. In many Italian-American homes, biscotti became closely tied to coffee, holidays, Sunday meals, and family gatherings.

How We Bake Biscotti Today
At The Biscotti Company, we bake in small batches using a Sicilian family recipe passed down through generations.
Depending on the flavor, we use ingredients such as whole roasted almonds, pistachios, cranberries, Belgian chocolate, citrus, espresso, and spices.
Many of our biscotti also get one final touch before they leave the bakery: a light sprinkle of sea salt that helps bring the flavors forward.
